Premium Clear No 1 may be the highest grade of imported Western Red Cedar. Colour varies from whitish to some pale shade of brown, often using a
pinkish tinge. No clear distinction between heartwood sapwood. The sapwood and heartwood are almost white to beige with the heartwood having
incidences of dark beige to brown features on occasions. No clear distinction between sapwood and heartwood by colour, which varies from cream to
pink/red depending on the level of steaming the timber is given. Fairly plain in appearance although quarter- sawn surfaces sometimes show a
growth-ring figure, and where wavy grain is present there is sometimes a mottle figure. This is a type of mature Western Red Cedar. About 50 % the
boards are of exactly the same quality as Premium Clear No 1. The balance of boards may necessitate some docking and pre-selection. It is mature
containing only the occasional minor defect, this means just a minimal level of docking is required. Much like European Birch.
